What is  Oeko-Tex 100?

Most fabrics we here, at RSKS Design use, have the Oeko-Tex 100 standard. But what is it exactly?
Since 1992, The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® is a worldwide consistent, independent testing and certification system for raw, semi-finished, and finished textile products at all processing levels, as well as accessory materials used.

The testing process has many criteria and the materials that are certified with the Oeko-Tex 100 standard:
  • Do not contain traces of banned or legally regulated substances ( Azo colourants, formaldehyde, pentachlorophenol, cadmium, nickel, etc )
  • Do not contain traces of numerous harmful chemicals even if they are not (yet) legally regulated (in example pesticides)
  • Are skin and health friendly (i.e. have safe PH-levels)
  • Are manufactured in a way that is environmentally safe (i.e. low water and energy waste during manufacturing process )

It is also possible to acquire Oeko-Tex 100 standard certificate for a finished product. For that all materials used in the process(threads, fabrics, buttons, zippers, rivets, ribbons, etc) are tested so they fit the criteria of the certificate.

To sum it up, Oeko-Tex 100 Standard means that the materials are safe to use even for users with delicate skin or allergies and do not contain traces of dangerous substances or chemicals.
